I: INSECT REPELLENT HERBS

Herbs are good for more than cooking. Many have useful medicinal properties. And some are good for their insect repellent properties. Are you tired of using so many chemicals in your life and on your body? Try some of these concoctions instead.

Wellness Mama has an excellent post with Homemade Bug Spray Recipes.

DIY Natural also has a top notch post with Natural Homemade Insect Repellents.

Web MD has a page that discusses Alternative Mosquito Repellents

For a list of plants with mosquito repellent properties to plant in your garden, Natural Living Ideas has information on their Top Eleven plants: Citronella, Lemon Balm, Catnip, Marigolds, Basil, Lavender, Peppermint, Garlic, Pennyroyal, Rosemary, and Geranium.

I’ve got lots of garlic this year, but other than that, I only have one peppermint and two small rosemary plants. Our flooding last year drowned most of my rosemary and all of my lavender, which I haven’t replaced yet. I had lemon balm and catnip, but they died out a few years back. It looks like I’m out of here…and off to the nursery. Mama’s got some planting to do!

Do you have any of these growing in your garden? Have you noticed if they’ve helped with keeping mosquitoes at bay?

  1. Great post! I am so highly allergic to mosquitoes and they absolutely love me! I use Repel Lemon Eucalyptus oil spray and it’s very effective. It’s expensive though –at least in the quantities that I need it — so may pay to make your own…

  2. A very very useful post especially as most of us want to keep away from chemicals! I have used eucalyptus oil and citronella oil. both work quite well. Recently I got a plant called Tulbaghia violacea which according to the nursery is a mosquito repellent. I am not sure if this is true but its flowers are very pretty!

    • Thank you! I’m glad you liked it. Eucalyptus and citronella are both great essential oils! I haven’t heard of Tulbaghia violacea. It sounds interesting. Let me know if it works.
